Education - Southwood Primary School

Previous Arrow Next Arrow

Design & construction of a detached two-storey teaching block expanding the existing school by an additional form of entry.
The project provided a rapid yet permanent sustainable solution in time for the new academic year. Jerram Falkus worked with the Client Team, Meadowcroft Griffin Architects and KLH UK Ltd to provide an off-site fabricated cross-laminated timber structure which was erected on site in just two weeks, and was dry-clad and fitted out without the need for any wet trades.
The building includes WC’s, group rooms, resource spaces, offices and stores.
The external cladding is insulation board faced with a laminate Rainscreen cladding with open joints. Windows and external doors are polyester powder coated aluminium.
The flat roof is covered by Sarna single ply membrane over cut-to-falls insulation board.
The building is heated by roof mounted air source heat pumps feeding wet underfloor heating pipework. This exceeds the required 20% renewable energy target.
Internal wall finishes are plasterboard dry lining, with some structural walls left as exposed CLT for aesthetic appearance and to act as a calming influence for pupils.
External work included covered play spaces with polycarbonate canopies.
